The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is the digital gateway to numerous scholarships offered by Central and State Governments, making the application process simpler and more transparent. This guide breaks down the essential steps for filling out your NSP application, along with a list of mandatory documents you need to secure your financial aid.

📝 How to Apply for NSP Scholarship: A Step-by-Step Guide

The application process on NSP now prominently features a One Time Registration (OTR) system, which is mandatory for many schemes and is valid throughout your academic career, eliminating the need for repetitive annual registrations.

Part 1: One Time Registration (OTR) & eKYC

  1. Visit the NSP Portal: Go to the official NSP website Apply for One Time Registration (OTR) and click on 'New Registration'.

  2. Read Guidelines & Accept: Carefully read all the registration guidelines, accept the terms, and proceed.

  3. Mobile & Aadhaar Verification: Enter your mobile number and verify it with an OTP. Then, continue with the eKYC process, which requires your Aadhaar number.

    • Note: If you don't have an Aadhaar, you may be able to register using an Enrollment ID, but you'll need to update your Aadhaar details later. For minor students, parent/legal guardian Aadhaar can be used.

  4. Generate OTR ID: Upon successful verification, your unique One Time Registration (OTR) reference number will be generated and sent to your registered mobile number.

  5. Face Authentication (Mandatory for OTR): To complete the OTR process and generate your final OTR number, you need to download and install the NSP OTR App and the AadhaarFaceRD services app on an Android device to perform Face Authentication.

  6. To perform Face Authentication, open NSP OTR in your phone and choose face auth to perform Face Authentication.

  7. After Face Authentication, you will receive your OTR number on the screen.

  8. Check your SMS for password that is crucial to login.

  9. Congrats you generated your OTR and password. Now, you are ready to apply for Scholarships.

Part 2: Application Submission (Fresh/Renewal)


  1. Go to NSP Homepage, click NSP Homepage students section, choose apply for scholarships , login and proceed.

  2. Application Form: Click on 'Application Form' to start filling out the detailed application. Login and start applying.

  3. Fill Details: Accurately fill in the following sections:

    • Registration Details: (Auto-filled and not editable)

    • For School students, for scholarship type select Pre-Matric.

    • For College students, select Post-Matric/Top Class/MCM.

    • Academic Details: Select your Institute (which must be registered on the portal), current course, and provide previous academic records (10th, 12th, etc.) whatever asked.

    • General/Basic Details: Fill in personal details, community, religion, Annual Family Income, marital status, and address.

    • Application Specific & Scheme Details: Select the appropriate scholarship scheme for which you meet the eligibility criteria.

  4. Upload Documents: Upload the required documents as specified in your selected scheme (file size must be between 20kb-200kb in PDF/JPG format).

  5. Final Submit: Carefully review all the entered details. Remember, no edits are allowed after Final Submission. Click 'Final Submit'.

While the exact documents vary by scheme, keep the following generally required certificates ready in the specified digital format:

  • Aadhaar Card 

  • Educational Certificates (Mark sheets from Class IX onwards, depending on the scheme)

  • Income Certificate (Issued by a competent authority, typically required to be of the current financial year)

  • Caste Certificate (If applying under SC, ST, OBC, or Minority schemes)

  • Bank Passbook (The account should be Aadhaar seeded for DBT)

  • Domicile/Residence Certificate

  • Bonafide Student Certificate from your Institution
